Buhari calls for inclusion of Islamic books in federal schools’ Curriculum

President Buhari has called on the Federal Ministry of Education to include two Islamic Studies books written by the late Justice Muhammad Bashir Sambo in the secondary school curriculum for all Federal Government Colleges.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, President Buhari gave the directive at the weekend in Kaduna while launching the reviewed editions of the books which were first published in 1974.

Represented by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, the president, according to NAN noted that such books had become essential in the face of declining moral and religious values in the country.

I read it yesterday, I swear im not happy abt this. Buhari shuld concentrate on his campaign promises first. They r too numerous to be ignored. Islam is our problem yet u want to spread it like ebola. People cried u were going to islamize Nigeria if elected, now I see.

I hope people will be able patient enough to read his statement before rushing to sound emotional.
He was only making a suggestion, as he was present at the book launch.
And its an Islamic book with much interest on morality.

As long as there is Islamic religious studies in federal schools, I see no need for such directives. It shouldn't not be one-sided also, christian books n tradional books should also be included; if there's anything like dat. He is d president of Nigeria n not of Islamist

That's ok.

I also think if the young children are being taught the right teachings of Islam,it'll be more difficult for them to be brainwashed.

Don't jump into matters like this in a biased form my brother! We simply pray for our nation

I remember in primary school, i was forced to do crk at which i excelled. I also remembered never doing any Islamic knowledge alongside and am still standing today as a proud muslim. That knowledge of CRK taught me some morals which was fortified by my arabic shool lessons.I was able also to know about the Christian religion. Currebtly, my son attends a school where CRK is compulsory but no Islamic knowledge. I showed my concern to the school authorities but they said I could take him to an arabic school after school that all they try to do is to instill some moral lessons to their wards. Morality in our current society is at its lowest ebb hence, i believe its a step in the right direction.

#sighs...I know you like him buh honestly? If you were in secondary, will you want to include 'Islamic' books to your curriculum? I dnt mind reading a book if it's a morally sound book written by a muslim, the fact that it is an 'islamic book' makes a world of difference. Forcing all fed government colleges to read it is even more oppressive, how many federal government schools in the north read christian religious studies books? Abi they are not morally sound enough??

Anonymous said...

Oh my God.

@Michael Lawson, your parents definitely didn't raise you to speak like this.I can't believe any parent will teach an offspring to be this mannerless.

This is why we need religious and moral teachings back in our schools. We have absolutely no respect and no brain.

Linda, please stop your partial and misleading news.you have to be careful.most of your readers have brains but don't utilize it.CRS AND IRS(CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS STUDIES) were taught in schools when we were growing up.Christian prayers were said on assembly on one day and Muslim prayers on another day.

A lot of your readers are educated illiterates Linda.watch it please.

This taught a lot of us religious tolerance. You aren't mandated to say the prayer if you don't want to.You are also allowed to choose which of the religious subject you wanted to learn but it was compulsory to do one like it was compulsory to do one Nigerian language and one vocational subject(food and nutrition, needle work, woodwork).we had guidance and counseling etc.

The removal of these subjects from our school curriculum is why a Michael would lack respect. You obviously don't have respect Michael and this has nothing to do with age.you don't respect yourself, you can't respect the next human being.

This generation is a shame.JESUS,please take control LORD.

Bonario, the readers aren't the main problem here.Linda is being her usual mischievous self .Even if its adopted, its for those that will learn Islamic studies.

The book also though written by a Muslim,is more on values and morality than any one religion. The books used in school are written by different authors practicing different religions.

Linda,I reiterate, keep fanning hate and discord.if you add to Nigeria burning, you'll remain a second citizen in another mans country. No matter how rich we are,the whites would always look at us with disdain. They'll take our money when we go shopping and lodge in hotels but they'll snicker behind our backs.

I know this because I have experienced it.Even with my children having dual citizenship and schooling in prestigious schools abroad. No,I'm not a politician nor married to one and yes I'm a Christian 100% but even if I can stay comfortably abroad, what of friends and the rest of my family (cousins, nieces and nephews?)

Be careful Linda.

Ask yourselves what was the context of the directive & what it was supposed to achieve.
If the same PMB had asked certain Christian books to be introduced into the system you wouldn't have had any problems.
The ultimate quality of a man is in the product of his thoughts.
Please endeavour to produce quality thoughts, it's impossible for anybody to Islamise the country just like that. ..well you wouldn't even know cos you don't think!

Some people are just so myopic in thinking. When Buhari was head of state, when he had the power to do as he pleases, he didn't islamise Nigeria. Is it now when there are people checkmating his activities that he would? Moreover, it was just a suggestion as and incase u guys haven't heard, religious studies is going to be merged with some other subjects in the new curriculum therefore, the young generation is gonna be trained based on just social norms. We all know religion is a way of life so merging religious studies with social studies will reduce the quality of religious way children will be brought up. Buhari being a Muslim is trying to do something about it by suggesting good Islamic books. Christian religious leaders should also rise up and do something about it. So instead of criticising Buhari, we should pray to God to assist him in rebuilding our country. God bless Nigeria

I don't see anything particularly wrong with President Buhari suggesting that the said book should be included in the curriculum of our educational books. First and foremost, he is a Muslim, and so there is nothing morally wrong with him promoting his religion (if it is for a good cause, that is!). We equally have good Christian literatures in the curriculum, and nobody has asked us to bring them down. I would have been worried if I read that Buhari has ordered all Christian books to be put out of the curriculum or out of circulation.

Our christians should write books and put forward...to d education board.
It is not buhariz fault that he is proactive as far as islam is concerned...he knows our generation has a problem!
If it were to be a christian book- christians will not complain.
Buhari is a muslim and has the right to advance their teachings esp if constructive..
Have christian leaders even seen our generation as going down on morality?
Let alone write and propose books for our education board?
Has anybody in christendom proposed?
Are our pastors not more focused on increasing the fold regardless of poor dress sense and moral decadence & preaching financial prosperity than actually writing books to tackle moral decadence?
Let us look inwards and ask ourselves sincere questions than fight a man for proposing what he feels is good rather than carrying over political/religious sentiments that dont help matters.
Have we read the book?
Is it against the law?
Has buhari said christians or anybody for that matter cant propose?
Has CAN written a book for youths and got rejected yet?
Buhari is a muslim,i never expected him to propose a christian book first- it makes perfect sense to me...
Nigerians again- majoring on the minor!
The man is trying to actualise what he promised and so far he is in line....but no ,we wud rather insult him here on lib..but glorify corrupt leaders all cos of sentiments.
Ps..i am a xtian.

They should remove religion completely from our school curriculum. What you chose to believe in is your business, leave us out of it.

Unknown said...

this is disappointing.

Muslims didn't complain when CRK was been forced on them, why should Christians complain about this. If you don't want islamic studies in schools, then CRK should be removed as well.

islam is not our problem- extremism in all forms is our problem.
Our corruption is extreme.
Our indispline is extreme.
Name it..
Moral decadence is our problem- especially amongst youth- the book addresses it.
If a book will help his fellow muslim kids behave better- why do you have a problem with it?
If our great christian leaders too write and push good books to CRS curriculum- will it be a crime?
Or u dont think moral decadence is a problem?
U dont think our youths need a new direction?
He saw one means- if christians or any faith have solutions they should proffer- instead of bickering on lib- it changes nothing.
Lib for example- dont u see the kind of language and ill-behaviour displayed by some young people here? You will think some have no guardians or parents to teach them manners.

Linda pls what next? for those that vote him in should wait and see.......

Tell them .please

Fears expressed, apparently by non Muslims, are unfounded as the book would only be useful for students who have registered Islamic studies as one of their subjects of study. However, it's the responsibility of relevant officials of the ministry rather than the President to determine if the book has enough quality to be included in the curriculum.

Firstly this Bonario is a little Kid...i've been ignoring your immature comments on issues posted here.. this initiative is outrightly wrong... we are not an islamic country and Islam has nothing! I mean nothing to teach on morality..come on.. don't spread your hypocrisy and false doctrines to our upcoming generation...I am sure this is a cultural Jihad which is more deadly than the violent ones because with time children begin to join Islam by themselves...

This man is gradually showing us his Islamic agenda. What moral will those book give to secondary schools apart from terrorism and Bokoharimisasion? This old Daura COW should focus on reasonable thing than making fool of the presidency. Enough of this stupid decisions.

It is optional.
Buhari is strict but wise.
Back in the barracks, he refused the protests of muslim soldiers to have friday as a public holiday. They thought sentiments will prevail but...
Why?
He told them he had read the quran more than most of the young soldiers & it doesnt ask muslims to not work on fridays.
He told them he has read in the bible that it is a day of rest & therefore christian soldiers were given some form of rest.
It is well documented!
Is this the man people call an extremist?
I think we are just not used to good, firm and strict leaders..

Ken , i blame you for poor comprehension.
For showing extreme sentiments.
For religious intolerance....but partly i blame lib for posting it like this- it will stir up sentiments.
Linda! Your hero didnt win - accept it!lol

You are always supporting your stupid brother Buhari, I hope you will support him the day Boko Haram will bomb you. You are just a nuisance on this blog.

PMB I beg to differ on this. You know that one of the biggest issues we have in this country is religion, yet you are suggesting or recommending religious books in federal schools. There is no Minister in charge of Education whose duty it is to examine the necessity or otherwise of including or excluding books from the schools' curriculum and who will in turn suggest or recommend to you for approval. Instead, you have taken up the tripartite assignment of the opinion former, recommender and approving authority. It does not work that way Mr. President.

Mistake

Oh! I would have called you a coward but I'm a good christian. You're pardoned

Unknown said...

Bonario i can really see your out of your senses,we have IRK AND CRK for both muslims and Christians if any other book should be included then Christian books should be added.A typical Fulani man sees nobody but them

Unknown said...

Please this is not islamisation bcos it is a matter of choice. The two dominant religions on Nigeria have different courses to their name...so introducing more books should not be a treat. Even in the U.S., they study Sheik Rumi's poetry, he is a foremost Islamic scholar, and also in philosophy in Nigerian universities have Medieval philosophy in Islam in the curriculum, so please don't be biased when u give remarks about things.

As the President of populous multi-cultural and multi religious nation, he should know by now every statement he makes would be analysed. Introducing Islamic text into educational curriculum should not be priority in Nigeria. Such suggestions should be left for islamic clerics to make.

Without being biased, if the book has much to contribute to the education nation wide, I see no reason why we should crucify him. Such books will be for IRS 'Islamic Religious studies' I guess.
After all lots of Christian books are used in our schools nation wide.
